Dalapathi is a 1991 film directed by Mani Ratnam. The film is the Telugu-dubbed version of the highly acclaimed 1991 Tamil action drama film Thalapathi. It stars Rajinikanth and Mammootty. It is loosely based on the epic friendship between Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata. The story begins with Surya (Rajinikanth), an abandoned child of an unwed teenage mother, Kalyani (Srividya). Raised in the slums by a kind woman, Surya grows up to be a fearless and just "slum king," fighting against injustice. His reputation for fiercely protecting the poor leads him to cross paths with Devaraj (Mammootty), a powerful local gangster. After a confrontation where Surya severely injures one of Devaraj's men, Surya is arrested. However, Devaraj sees that Surya has a genuine sense of justice. Thus, he gets him released from prison. Following this, the two develop an unbreakable bond and soon, Surya becomes Devaraj's trusted "Dalapathi" (commander). Together, the friends begin challenging the corrupt elements of society, and their actions often involve violent means. On the other hand, Arjun (Arvind Swamy), an honest and idealistic new District Collector, arrives in the city. In a twist in the tale, Arjun turns out to be the legitimate son of Kalyani. This makes him Surya's half-brother. The narrative then moves on to explore the unavoidable clash between Surya and Devaraj's vigilante justice and Arjun's commitment to keeping the law. The film has a layered plat that includes his past, his loyalty to Devaraj, and his relationship with his birth mother. All this together, make for an emotional and engaging narrative, culminating in a dramatic climax where loyalty, family, and justice are put to the test.
