



Muthu (Rajinikanth), a lazy guy from a village, falls for Devi (Meena), a singer's daughter. To impress her, Muthu pretends to learn music from her father. Devi overhears Muthu's plan to trick her and confronts him. Ashamed, Muthu focuses on music and eventually wins Devi over. They secretly marry, but before they can tell everyone, a rich landlord's son tries to attack Devi. Muthu saves her. The angry landlord insults Muthu's mother and threatens to kick her out of her house because of an old debt. Muthu goes to Madras to earn money. In Madras, Muthu wants to win a music competition. He meets a tabla player, Ravikanth, who gives him the stage name Veera. They try many times to enter the competition but fail. Muthu saves the competition organizer's daughter, Roopa (Roja), from a gangster. With Roopa's help, Muthu performs and wins the prize money. He returns home, pays off the debt, and saves his mother's house. He finds out a flood destroyed Devi's house, and Devi and her father are missing. Thinking Devi is dead, Muthu's mother tells him to start a new life in Madras. What happens next is the crux of the story. What happened to Devi? Does Muthu marry Roopa?
