Thenali Soman (Kamal Hassan) is a Tamil refugee from Sri Lanka who comes to Chennai for mental health treatment. He has many fears because of the war in Sri Lanka. Two older doctors, Pancha Bhootam (Delhi Ganesh) and his helper (Ramesh Khanna), are jealous of a younger doctor, Kailash (Jayaram), who is getting all the attention. They send Thenali to Kailash, hoping he will fail to cure Thenali's fears and ruin his success. Soon after their first meeting, Kailash goes on vacation to his home in Kodaikanal with his wife (Devayani) and kids. Kailash tells Thenali to wait until he returns, but Panchabhootham tells Thenali to go meet Kailash during his vacation. Thenali goes to Kailash's house and falls in love with Janaki (Jyothika), Kailash's younger sister. Kailash is strongly against this. Kailash gets angrier and angrier with Thenali's strange behaviour and even starts to think his wife is having an affair with Thenali because she is kind to him. Once, he tries to kill Thenali by tying him to a tree with a bomb that has a timer. Thenali thinks it's a fake bomb to help him overcome his fears, so he takes it off and puts it in Kailash's house, where it explodes. Seeing this, Kailash becomes paralyzed. Later, Thenali marries Janaki, believing that Kailash was tricked into buying a real bomb. While Thenali, Kailash, and their families are on a picnic, Thenali's wife, who was lost for a long time and is also named Janaki, shows up, and they are reunited. Furious, Kailash jumps out of his wheelchair and yells at Thenali for ruining his sister Janaki's life. But then he realizes that Thenali set everything up to cure his paralysis. The woman was actually an actress named Meena (Meena), whom Thenali hired to pretend to be his wife. Kailash understands his mistake and thanks Thenali. Thenali is a wholesome family entertainer with many funny scenes.
