Sangamam is about the conflicts between two different kinds of dance and music troops in Tamil Nadu. On one side, there is classical Indian art, specifically Carnatic music and Bharathanatyam dance. On the other side, there is traditional Tamil folk music and dance from the villages. The movie shows how these two groups don't understand each other and are ignorant of each other's art forms. At the same time, the children who are supposed to carry on the traditions of the classical and folk art forms fall in love with each other. At first, there are disagreements between a classical dancer and a rural folk artist. But they eventually charm each other and fall in love. However, their relationship faces problems because the girl's father doesn't approve of them being together. The movie explores how these different art forms and the people who practice them can find common ground, especially through the love between the young couple. Rahman and Vindhya play the lead roles.
