Ammaiyappan (Visu) is a government clerk. He lives with his big family. His wife is Godavari (Kamala Kamesh). They have sons named Chidambaram (Raghuvaran), Siva (Chandrasekhar), and Bharathi (Haja Sheriff). They also have a daughter named Sarojini (Ilavarasi). Chidambaram's wife is Uma (Lakshmi). Ammaiyappan's salary is not sufficient to meet his family's needs. His sons contribute to the family's expenses. He wants to marry off Sarojini. Sarojini falls in love with her colleague, Peter (Dilip). Peter is a Christian. She is Hindu. Her family does not like this idea. However, Ammaiyappan meets Peter's father, Albert.
