Vadivelu (Kamal Hassan), a butcher, lives in a slum with his 16-year-old sister Rani. Their neighbour Selvi (Bhanupriya) loves Vadivelu and wants to marry him. At first, he is annoyed by her, but then he starts to like her. However, he says he'll only marry Selvi if Rani gets married first, but Rani is too young. Rani is actually in love with Ramesh (Ramesh Aravind) and tells Selvi. Selvi then pretends to be a boy who also loves Rani, hoping Ramesh will compete with ""him"" to win Rani's heart. Ramesh and Rani fall in love, and Selvi tells Ramesh she's a girl and that she wants him and Rani to marry so she can marry Vadivelu. But Ramesh knows his rich family won't accept Rani because she is poor. Meanwhile, Ramesh's father, Paramasivan (VK Ramasamy), and his driver, Govindan (Goundamani), have a run-in with Selvi's alcoholic father and break his ironing cart. This leads to a fight between Vadivelu and Paramasivan. A lot of interesting things unfold in the second half of the movie. Maharasan is a fun film to watch with family.
