Kalyanam (Kamal Hassan) is a simple-minded young man whose father, Chinnadurai (VS Raghavan), owns a big tea farm. Chinnadurai is worried because Kalyanam can't manage the farm or care for himself. He wants Kalyanam to get married, but Kalyanam doesn't like the girl his father chooses. Kalyanam loves Shenbagam (Sridevi), who works on the farm and is the daughter of Chinnadurai's driver. Kalyanam tries to win Shenbagam's love with help from his young friend Kuppu, but she doesn't like him back. The farm's manager wants to steal Chinnadurai's money and land. He works with the driver and the cook and hires someone to kill Chinnadurai. Before he dies, Chinnadurai tells Kalyanam that he left his first wife, Rajalakshmi, and Kalyanam's twin brother, Raman (Kamal Hassan), in Madras. He tells Kalyanam to go there to be safe from the bad workers. Does Kalyanam meet Raman? Does the villain succeed in his plan? Whom does Shenbagam marry? To know the answers to these questions, watch the movie. The film has many funny scenes, too. Kamal Hassan shines in the dual role. Sridevi delivers her best performance.
