



Raja (Gemini Ganesan) is the rich son of a landlord. Kannamma (Savithri) is a farmer's daughter. The landlord tells Kannamma's father to send her to school in Madras. On the train back, Kannamma meets Raja. They fall in love and secretly marry. Two days later, Raja goes abroad to study. His father learns about the marriage and tells Kannamma to forget Raja. Kannamma promises she will never tell anyone. Raja's father sends Kannamma, who is pregnant, and her father to a town nearby. Kannamma's father is ashamed of her secret marriage. He leaves Kannamma's baby son in an orphanage and lies that the baby was stillborn. They move to Bangalore. When Raja returns, he hears Kannamma left. People in the nearby town make him think her character is not good. He is sad and starts drinking. Kannamma's son, Selvam (Kamal Hassan), grows up in an orphanage. Kannamma's father moves there to be near him. Kannamma becomes a teacher at Selvam's school and likes him. Does Kannamma know that Selvam is her son? Does the family reunite? Answers to such questions are revealed in the later part of the film in an interesting manner. Kamal Hassan rules the screen as Selvam. Savithri and Gemini Ganesan deliver commendable performances. The songs are excellent. Overall, Kalathur Kannamma is an amazing watch.
