Iruvar tells a story about two men, Anandan (Mohanlal) and Tamizhselvan (Prakash Raj), who become famous in Tamil Nadu politics in the 1980s. It's based on the lives of the political leaders M. G. Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi. In the 1950s, Anandan, a struggling actor, wants to become a star. He meets Tamizhselvan, a writer, and they become friends. Tamizhselvan helps Anandan get a movie role. Anandan joins Tamizhselvan's political party, led by Anna Durai (Nassar). Anandan marries Pushpa (Aishwarya Rai), and Tamizhselvan marries another woman (Revathy). Anandan's movie is cancelled, and he is sad. Pushpa dies in an accident. Tamizhselvan helps Anandan again, and his new movie is a big hit. Anandan becomes famous and helps the party. He marries Ramani (Gauthami). Anna Durai dies, and Tamizhselvan becomes the party leader. Anandan feels left out. They become rivals. Tamizhselvan has a second wife (Tabu). Anandan meets Kalpana (Aishwarya Rai), who looks like Pushpa. They have an affair. Anandan starts his own party and wins the election. He becomes the chief minister. Anandan and Tamizhselvan try to outdo each other. Anandan arrests Tamizhselvan. Anandan's rule is as corrupt as Tamizhselvan's. Kalpana dies in an accident. Tamizhselvan is released from jail. They meet at a wedding and shake hands. Anandan falls, and Tamizhselvan helps him. The next day, Anandan dies. Tamizhselvan goes to the funeral but can't see the body. He goes to their first meeting place and mourns his friend. Anandan's body is paraded through the streets. All the actors have done a fabulous job. The narration and writing are excellent. On the whole, Iruvar is a treat for lovers of political drama.
