Velu (Vijay) is a young man in Chennai who loves to play Kabaddi. His father, a police officer, wants him to study more. Velu’s mother is sweet, and his sister is fun. One day, Velu skips a wedding to play Kabaddi in another city, Madurai. His team is called Ghilli. In Madurai, there is a bad gang leader named Muthupandi (Prakash Raj). He wants to marry a girl named Dhanalakshmi (Trisha). When her brother says no, Muthupandi kills him. He also kills her other brother when he tries to get revenge. Dhanalakshmi's father is scared and tells her to run away to her uncle in America. While she is trying to escape, Muthupandi catches her. But Velu fights Muthupandi and takes Dhanalakshmi to Chennai.
