Coimbatore Mappillai is a romantic comedy drama starring Vijay and Sanghavi. Balu who lives in Coimbatore comes to Chennai. He stays there with his friend named Gopal who is unemployed but said a lie that he is doing a job. They are the tenant of a girl named Sumithra. In the beginning, Balu and Sumithra gets into a fight, but their arguments turn them into lovers. Her cousin Mahesh is also in love with Sumithra. When a thief stoles a necklace, Balu tries to catch him. Unfortunately, he puts that necklace in Balu’’ pocket. With that, Balu is blamed for stealing the necklace. With that, Sumithra hates Balu. Mahesh who takes the advantage of this incident hires goons to attack Balu and Sumithra to create difference between them and blames Balu for that attack too. Balu who felt bad explains everything that happened in his life to the grandmother named Paatiamma that he lost his mother when he was very young and could not go through the torture of his stepmother. So he ran out of the house. Listening to that, Paatiamma believes him. However, Mahesh who wanted to take revenge puts the wire set up that makes her paralysed. Suddenly, Sumithra hears that Mahesh and his father wanted to kill her. Balu pays the medical bills of Paatiamma in the hospital and decided to commit suicide. Luckily, Sumithra save Balu.
