Gandhi steals medicine for his dying mother but arrives too late to save her. With no money to cremate her, he is approached by ward boy Prakasam, who demands payment to preserve her body. Businessman Ram Mohan Rao's wife is sick, and during a chance encounter, Rao's daughter Harika is moved by Gandhi’s plight and pays for his mother’s funeral. After the funeral, Gandhi finds himself homeless and jobless. He later saves a woman named Lakshmi from drowning after she jumps off a bridge. Gandhi arrives at Lakshmi's house and discovers a misleading job advertisement by Ram Mohan Rao.
