In 2006, a spaceship crashes in "Brightburn", Kansas. Tori and Kyle discover a baby inside and adopt him, naming him Brandon, who later develops extraordinary powers before turning twelve. In middle school, shy Brandon, who is often bullied, has a crush on his classmate Caitlyn. When he is called a pervert during a trust exercise, he squeezes her hand in anger and gets suspended after an argument with her mother. Brandon sleepwalks to the barn and hides in a spaceship. Tori follows him and sees him floating in the air, saying, "Take the world." She talks about his past, and Brandon makes a mess before killing Erika. After trying to sneak into his aunt and uncle's house, he ends up killing his uncle Noah. The police call Noah's death an accident, but Brandon feels no regret. Kyle finds Brandon's blood-stained shirt, but Tori does not believe it. Kyle tries to get rid of Brandon during a hunting trip, but his plan fails. Brandon fights back with his heat vision, which kills Kyle. Tori, at the very same time uncovers clues linking the murders and faces threats from Brandon. What drove him to this madness?
