The plot of Bombay starts in 1985. Shekhar (Arvind Swamy), a Hindu student, returns to his village in Tamil Nadu. He falls in love with Shaila Banu (Manisha Koirala), who is a Muslim. Their parents disapprove of this due to religious differences. Shekhar's father and Shaila's father argue and cause problems. Shekhar and Shaila don't have an option but leave for Mumbai. Their only concern is that they are away from their parents. They raise one son as Hindu and the other as Muslim. They get married and have two sons, Kamal and Kabeer. They enjoy life and live happily. They live a simple life but are happy. In 1992, there were riots in Mumbai. Hindus and Muslims fight, which makes things hard for their family. Their fathers come to live with them, which creates more problems. But it also helps the fathers understand each other. Director Mani Ratnam tells a complex story in a beautiful way. He mixes romance, drama, and action. The characterisation is too good. The narration is interesting. The writing keeps the viewers engaged and interested in the film. Children are used well to portray certain messages. The music by Rahman is excellent. The visuals are stunning. Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koilrala do a tremendous job. The child actors act well too. Overall, Bombay is a masterpiece you shouldn't miss.
