Pandiyan (Kamal Haasan) is a dance assistant. He lives with his wife, Janaki (Meena), and daughter. Janaki is the daughter of a rich man (Gemini Ganesan). They have problems, and Janaki divorces Pandiyan, taking their daughter with her. Pandiyan misses his daughter. With help from his friend (Nagesh), Pandiyan dresses up as an old lady, Avvai Shanmugi, and works as a maid at Gemini Ganesan's house. This lets him be close to his daughter and Janaki. The movie shows the funny things that happen. Shanmugi becomes popular with Janaki, her daughter, Gemini Ganesan, and the house owner Mani Vannan. The movie's story (by Crazy Mohan) finds humour in every situation. The court scene is a good example. With the Shanmugi character, the situations become even funnier. Kamal plays two roles, dealing with Gemini Ganesan and Mani Vannan, who like Shanmugi; Delhi Ganesh, who tries to expose her; and Heera, who likes Pandiyan. The movie has a great cast. Delhi Ganesh, Nagesh, and Nasser are all memorable. Delhi Ganesh is especially good with his funny talking. Gemini Ganesan and Mani Vannan are so good they steal scenes from Kamal. Meena is good in the comedy and believable in the serious parts. The child actress is cute and natural. Kamal is the centre of the movie. His makeup is excellent. He plays Shanmugi well, capturing the old lady's mannerisms. Most of the jokes are clean. Avvai Shanmugi is funny and a great example of the Kamal-Crazy Mohan team's work.
