Prasanna (Kamal Hassan) is a young man who does rebellious things, which his widowed father, Mahendran, doesn't like. One day, Prasanna gets beaten up for yelling at people in a car that splashed water on him. Bhairavi (Srividya), a singer, sees him lying hurt on the road after her concert. She takes him home, and her doctor friend Suri treats him. Bhairavi asks Prasanna to stay with her even after he gets better. He slowly falls deeply in love with her, even though she is much older than him. Before Prasanna came, Bhairavi's daughter Ranjani (Jayasudha), who thought she was adopted, finds out she is actually Bhairavi's daughter, born outside of marriage. Upset by her mother's lie, she runs away and meets Mahendran (Sundarrajan) in Bangalore while trying to sell some things. He asks her to stay at his house for a few days. Impressed by how much he loved his dead wife, how much he misses his son Prasanna, and how kind he is to her, she wants to marry him, even though he is old enough to be her father. Bhairavi and Mahendran both say no to Prasanna and Ranjani's marriage proposals because of the age difference and other reasons.
