Kala is the Telugu-dubbed version of the Malayalam film Kala. Shiva (Tovino Thomas) is a laid-back guy in Kerala who lives with his wife Vidya (Divya Pillai) and their son on their farm. They're having money problems, and Shiva often argues with his wealthy father-in-law, who has cut Vidya off. One day, a strange named Shaji (Lal) comes to their town and starts doing small jobs. Shaji's creepy vibe makes Shiva uneasy, especially when he sees Shaji near his house. Things get worse when Shiva's dog disappears, and he thinks Shaji took it. We then see Shaji's past: he was a great fighter, but a powerful man betrayed him, and now he wants revenge. Back in the present, Shiva's quick temper causes fights with his farm workers, making his financial problems even bigger. One night, Shaji breaks into Shiva's house, and they have a violent fight. As they battle, secrets come out. Shaji is looking for something hidden on Shiva's land that's connected to his past. Vidya gets caught in the middle of the fighting, trying to keep their son safe. Their fight moves all over the farm, with intense battles using knives and sticks in the pouring rain. Shiva, who used to be arrogant, starts to realize how strong Shaji is and why he's doing this.
