Chandran (Rajinikanth) is a college graduate looking for his first job. He and his sister, Uma (Viji Chandrasekhar) only have their doctor friend. The doctor tells him about a job interview at his friend Sriramachandramurthy's (Thengai Srinivasan) company. Sriramachandramurthy is old-fashioned. He likes sports but doesn't respect young people who play them. He also dislikes men without moustaches, thinking they have bad character. Chandran has a moustache. The doctor tells him to act in ways Sriramachandramurthy likes to get the job. This includes wearing a Nehru jacket, always saying his full name, emphasising his moustache, acting properly, not showing interest in sports or drama, respecting parents, and not relying on recommendations. Chandran impresses Sriramachandramurthy and gets hired. One day, Chandran lies and says his dead mother is sick so he can watch a football match. Sriramachandramurthy is also at the match and sees him. The next day, his boss asks him about it. To avoid getting fired, Chandran lies again. He remembers a movie his actor friend Nagesh is filming and tells Sriramachandramurthy he saw his identical twin brother Indran, who doesn't have a moustache, at the stadium. Sriramachandramurthy believes him and feels bad for doubting him. He hires ""Indran"" to teach his daughter, Sarojini (Maadhavi), music as an apology. Chandran now lives a double life: a good employee named Chandran and Sarojini's music teacher, ""Indran."" Sarojini and ""Indran"" fall in love. How he manages both roles is the rest of the film.
