The plot of Yaathisai is set in the seventh century. An old man narrates the story. The story focuses on a massive struggle for power during the Pandya dynasty. The main conflict is between a powerful king, Ranadheera Pandiyan (Shakthi Mithran), and a brave tribal warrior named Kothi (Seyon). Ranadheera Pandiyan is a cruel ruler who has conquered many lands. He forces smaller groups like the Eyinar tribe into exile. Kothi, a young leader of the Eyinar clan, refuses to live in hiding. He dreams of winning back his tribe's dignity and land. To do this, he makes a secret deal with the defeated Chola king, Uri (Guru Somasundaram). Kothi promises to capture a strategic fort from the Pandyas if the Cholas provide him with extra soldiers later. Kothi leads his tribal warriors in a daring surprise attack against the Pandya king’s army in the mountains. In a shocking turn of events, the small tribal group manages to capture a royal fort. For the first time, Kothi sits on a throne, but he soon realizes that keeping power is much harder than winning a battle. The Pandya king quickly gathers his forces to take back his kingdom.
