Kottukkaali follows Meena (Anna Ben) and Pandi (Soori), an engaged couple with problems. Meena seems possessed, but is it just her way of rebelling? Meena's family takes her to a priest and an exorcist to cure her. This journey is the main story, with villagers travelling by motorcycle and auto-rickshaw. The movie tries to be thoughtful; it can interest a particular audience. The film does well in showing caste and tradition. A scene where men turn Meena's auto-rickshaw symbolises her fight against society. At a puberty ceremony, Meena hums a song, which angers Pandi. This shows his unstable behaviour. He faces his own problems when he meets the exorcist. Anna Ben acts mostly without speaking, but she expresses a lot. Her one dialogue at the end is significant. Soori's Pandi is angry and unpredictable. The other actors act naturally, with no dubbing. Nirosha, Sai Abhinaya, and Jawahar Shakthi have also worked in the film. The movie uses real sounds well and has no music. A rooster, tied but trying to escape, is a symbol of Meena's limited life. Its journey mirrors hers. Kottukkaali is not action-packed. It's a movie that asks you to watch and understand village life. This creates some powerful moments but also some slow parts. Overall, Kottukkaali is a decent watch.
