Kanni Maadam is a movie that throws light on caste pride and its consequences. The story is about a couple based in Madurai who flee to Chennai to escape from the boy's enraged relatives. Maya (Saya Devi) and Kathir (Vishnu) are in love. When Kathir's family and relatives try to ruin their relationship, they run to Chennai to save their lives. They are trying to build a new life steadily in Chennai. When they start to settle down, an unexpected incident takes place. Kathir dies in a road accident. It takes time for Malar to overcome Kathir's loss. She struggles to lead a life in Chennai. She has financial trouble. She also does not have anyone to protect her. She panics when she learns that she is pregnant. Her two neighbours, played by Sreeram and Murugadoss, assist her with her struggles. The rest of the story is about how she faces different problems from different quarters. There is a parallel track in the film that involves Sreeram's romance with a female auto driver played by Velina. Their portion is a little engaging. Kanni Maadam displays the agony of the victims of caste pride in a good narration. Besides, the movie covers the routine life of the lower middle-class people of Chennai in a realistic manner. The actors have delivered a decent performance. Overall, Kanni Maadam is a decent movie to enjoy with family.
