The plot of Gunde Jhallumandi centers on Neelima (Aditi Sharma), a college student who is determined to stay away from boys. Her sister was previously cheated on and suffered greatly, so Neelima decides to protect herself by creating a fake boyfriend. She tells everyone in her college that she is in love with a man named "Rajesh". This lie helps her keep other students from approaching her. Meanwhile, Balaraju (Uday Kiran), a simple and shy young man from a small village, arrives in Hyderabad. He wants to become the president of his village, but the rules state that the president must have a college degree. Even though he stopped studying years ago, he joins the city college to get his degree. Initially, Balaraju struggles to fit in with the modern city students, but he eventually meets Neelima. She helps him change his style and gain confidence, and the two become very close friends. As their friendship grows into love, Neelima uses her fake boyfriend "Rajesh" as a shield whenever things get too serious. To match her story, Balaraju also creates a fictitious girlfriend named "Lavanya".
