In a village with clear social divisions, Madhava is a loyal friend and servant to Hema and her father. Hema's father is a former teacher and poet who struggles to publish his classical works. Hema and Madhava have strong feelings for each other but do not realize it because of their differences in caste and class. Hema discovers her love for Madhava during a local drama where she plays Parvati, but she keeps her feelings hidden due to social stigma.
