Vijay Sethupati plays the role of Ram, a travel photographer. Ram is also an instructor at the Fine Arts Institute. During one of their field trips with students, Ram happens to pass through his hometown. He stops at the school where he studied and memorises his sweet days from childhood as a student. As a school student, Ram has a crush on his classmate Jaanu. Jaanu has a melodious voice and is passionate about singing the melodies of playback singer S Janaki. Ram is diehard fan of her songs and always recommends via his friends, to fulfil his song request. Surprisingly, Jaanu never sang that particular song. Ram suddenly stops coming to school and disappears with his family, separating them. With his school time memories, Ram pings his schoolmates back and requests to arrange a school reunion. The reunion day comes in, and anxiety builds up in Ram to see his old love interest, Jaanu. Jaanu comes for the reunion, and Ram’s feelings rekindle, and all old memories are revisited as memories between the two. Ram drops Jaanu back at her hotel to spend time with her before departure. Finally, the moment Jaanu sings the song requested by Ram comes when she is taken to his flat to shelter from the unexpected rain. The time for Jaanu to depart comes, and she leaves Ram heavily. Ram returns to his apartment and finds the dress of Jaanu put for drying after she gets drenched in rain. He carefully folds the dress and adds it to his collection of sweet memories with Jaanu. There ends the film 96 on an emotional note.
